Advent – Day 5

Dec 05 in Advent

There is a candle for advent that you light each day in anticipation to the coming of the Messiah.  Jesus said “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” As Christians we are called to be lights in that darkness, to live differently. We are called to be lights, a beacon, “let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” You are a beacon to your family, to those around you. Never underestimate the place you hold in your home (or at work). Your moods will affect everyone around you and you are the sunshine that could brighten up someone’s day.

As you would light an advent candle each day,  lets think about ways in which we can be that light. There’s a story I love about a vicar and how one Sunday he asked for all the doors and windows to be closed in Church, for curtains to be shut and lights turned off. As they sat in complete darkness he asked the congregation to push out the darkness. This was obviously impossible to do. He then lit a match as he stood at the front facing the Church. The smallest flame pierced the darkness. How do we overcome darkness? By bringing the light. By shining His light.

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness”
