Psalms of Ascents – Psalm 128b

Sep 14 in Steps of Ascent

The second cause of happiness according to this Psalm is eating of the fruit of your labour (v.2) which comes with a promise of blessing and prosperity.  There is a condition attached though: Work!

The lazy person will always put things off, sleep too much, make excuses, waste time,  have lack and live in poverty and wonder why! Proverbs 6:6 tells us “Go to the ant thou sluggard, consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest”

Consider the ant and her ways, be wise!

What are the facts surrounding the ant? They have no boss, no leader or ruler but they love to work; they have a goal, are single minded, work hard and are motivated. They don’t live for today but plan ahead, making the most of their time, saving now and preparing for an uncertain future (collecting in time of plenty for when times are scarce). They are industrious, don’t waste time, working to feed themselves and their families, for which they will die to protect if necessary. They are determined fighters, they may be small and easily squashed, yet they persevere against all odds, are very resilient no matter the obstacle, adapting to ever changing environments; they are very disciplined and never give up until the work is done.

The ant’s strength lies in the colony’s unity of purpose, they can overcome every circumstance that affects them, be it – the destruction of their home structures which they are quick to relocate or repair – the breaking of their lines which they will return to or make a way through or over to continue on or- carrying food that weighs 20 times their own body weight. They will use anything in their way to use as a means to obtaining their final goal, they work intelligently and don’t fight among themselves; they are all dependable, all participate and think BIG. They are effective communicators and will cooperate with other ants, working as a team and accomplishing things that would seem impossible.

Whoever thought I could learn so much from an ant!
