The Word of God has many functions (Pt. 4)

Jun 13 in The Word

The Word of God covers Science, History, Psychology, Geography, Religious doctrine and Humanity.  It gives wisdom, hope, life and insight.  It is an eternal book.  “Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life…” John 6:68

9 – It is a sure and solid foundation that we can build and stand on, knowing that whatever happens we are secure for He never changes.  It is the only thing stable and permanent enough to build our lives upon.  The foundation determines the strength of a building.  He is the rock that doesn’t move no matter the size of the storm.  We learn to not look at the outward circumstances of life nor rely on feelings but stand on the One that can be trusted.

“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise master builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one must be careful how he builds. For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ… 1 Corinthians 3:10-11

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” Matthew 7:24-27

10 – It is a love letter from God to us

It is the law of this world, like the law of gravity His Word gives us instructions for life, however if you walk contrary to these commandments, it causes an opposite reaction, an adverse effect which not only affects us but the wider world in which we live. As parents we try to create a safe and loving environment for our children to grow, mature and develop in.  We want them to learn and listen to advice to save them from the pain and suffering of learning something the hard way.  Disobedience will cause them pain, not because that is what we desire for them but because it brings with it consequences that we would rather they avoid.

11 – The Word is tested through fire, through flood, through blood.

His Word can stop the rain, open the sea, cause armies to flee, resurrect from the dead, defeat Satan, reveal hidden treasures of truth, uncover hidden evil schemes, plans and/or motives… can change the world.

The Word brings us into a relationship with a living God, shows us who we are, reveals who He is & His heart towards us.

As I end this study on His Word my challenge to you is: Read His Word.

Try to invest your time in reading through the Bible in a year, you will be surprised by how it becomes something you even look forward to; a truly enriching activity that will really bless you and those around you (for it causes ‘me’ to become ‘a better me’).

I found that the task of reading it cover to cover could prove to be quite difficult at times (particularly through Numbers) so I found a method that worked with me.  I first began by underlining everything that ‘God said‘, the following year I began to underline everything that could be turned into a prayer.  After that I read it Chronologically to gain a better understanding of its historical context and background (I followed the Cover to Cover ‘through the Bible as it happened’ by S Hughes and TJ Partridge) creating my own time line (possibly only understandable to me).

This year I am underlining everything that pertains to me as a mum, wife and woman of faith.  I am currently in Proverbs although gone off course a little, I find that as I read I’m finding so many golden nuggets that I have to stop underline and pray them over myself and over my family and then sometimes over friends or even over the leaders of our nation (needless to say I am taking a while to get through Proverbs).

I had a friend who would take each book and make it her project, she would delve in the Word but read up on books and commentaries around it, gaining so much!  Its all about finding what works with you, it could be through Bible Journaling or post it notes or even audio.  So much to reap from His Word, His promise to us that once it goes forth, it won’t come back empty but will accomplish that for which it was set out.  Above all this, so worth it for we build a relationship with and come to know HIM.  A truly Wonderful God.
